Shaping the public conversation

At the Rudd Center, we understand that our novel research, innovative approaches, and policy recommendations will be able to make the greatest difference with the support of a powerful communications arm. To that end, we continuously engage the top experts in related fields, foster a strong relationship with the global press and broadcast media, and strengthen our presence online in an effort to remain on the cutting edge of obesity and food policy reform.

In addition to frequent connections with writers and producers from television, newspapers, magazines, and internet news services, media experts are invited to the Rudd Center to present colloquia, record podcasts, and share ideas with the Yale community. Recent visitors have been Marian Uhlman, former health writer from the Philadelphia Inquirer; Cole Kazdin, producer for Good Morning America; writer Gina Kolata from The New York Times; and journalist and author Michael Pollan.

Communications is a major focus at the Rudd Center. The upcoming year should be a time of growth in this area.

  • Gathering Experts: Our international conferences addressed such groundbreaking issues as whether food might be addictive, and our Seminar Series convened the world's experts on all matters related to obesity and food policy.
  • Rudd Center in the Popular Media: Our faculty received a substantial amount of media coverage in 2007, from hundreds of print publications to radio and television appearances.
  • New Media and Internet Initiatives: Launching a new website, expanding our award-winning blog, and recording a series of podcasts with our notable guest speakers reflect our truly multimedia approach to communicating our message.
