Fighting weight bias

Weight bias has been characterized as the last acceptable form of prejudice. As such, weight bias is rarely challenged and its devastating consequences are often ignored. The Rudd Center is one of the few organizations to draw attention to the seriousness of weight-based discrimination and the need for major changes in societal attitudes. In 2007 we addressed the stigmatization of overweight and obese people in three key ways:

• Targeting Scientific Efforts to Address Weight Bias: Conducting strategic science to challenge weight-based stereotypes, demonstrate the negative impact of bias on health, and identify effective strategies to reduce bias
• Increasing Public Awareness and Education: Using online, interactive media to inform the public about weight bias and its consequences
• Putting Weight Bias on the Map: Bringing media attention to issues of weight bias through targeted interviews with television, newspapers, websites, and public speaking engagements
